A recent overnight retreat for all seven secondary school councils at Camp Brébeuf helped unlock leadership potential.

Established by the board’s Religion and Family Life Department, the annual trip focuses on enabling student council members to strengthen their relationships with student leaders from other Catholic secondary schools and to build a support network for the coming school year.

“This retreat brought us closer together through our faith,” said Student Trustees Alyssia Perri and Jeleina Rasiah.

This year, the retreat was rooted in the Catholic Education Week 2023 theme: We Are Called to Love.

“It provided our young Catholic leaders the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God, grow in their teamwork skills as a student council and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation in the outdoors,” said Secondary Religion and Family Life Consultant Jen Curtis.

As is tradition, the retreat ended with a closing commissioning to serve as a reminder of the responsibility they've been entrusted with as Catholic leaders.

In his remarks, Director of Education David Hansen thanked students for answering the call and saying ‘yes’ to serving as young Catholic leaders within their secondary schools. He reminded students, that Mary, the Mother of God, is an example of a disciple who said yes to God’s call and a saint that we can all turn to in prayer for guidance as we live out the call to servant leadership as a disciple of Christ.
