Anti-Racism and Equity

DOTHP

“Catholic education is above all else a question of communicating Christ, of helping to form Christ in the lives of others.”

DOTHP

The Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) is guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, and places priority on promoting the dignity of the human person. In collaboration with our board, the Dignity of the Human Person Equity Office is committed to the collective commitment of enabling all learners to realize their fullness of humanity of which Jesus Christ is the model.

DOTHP

As one human family, our faith calls us to see ourselves in others and collaborate towards solutions. In solidarity with our school communities, the HWCDSB is committed to promoting justice, equity and fairness within our system. We recognize that loving our neighbor is a call of action to address systemic barriers, ensure accountability and advocate for the well-being of all.

Our commitment is guided by the following principles:

Inherent Dignity of Humanity

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

We recognize human dignity stems from being created in the image and likeness of God. The diversity of mankind, expressed in our unique differences exist on purpose for the purpose of revealing the masterpiece that God designed as the Body of Christ.

Respect and Inclusivity:

"Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts for one body, so it is with Christ." (1 Corinthians 12:12)

It is our goal that our Christ centred learning and professional environments uphold a standard of conduct that is predicated on respect, compassion and dignity in order for all to experience a meaningful sense of belonging.

Solidarity:

“If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” (1 Corinthians 12:26)

This sentiment is echoed through the words of South African martyer, Blessed Benedict Daswa, who said: “God gives us his strength to stand up for what is right even if it means making sacrifices and facing persecution… true charity starts with those around us.”

 Active Listening and Empathy:

“Carry each other’s burdens and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

True solidarity begins with listening, learning and collaborating as one community. Rooted in the teachings of Christ, we embrace the call to “rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15), walking alongside one another with compassion and care.”

Through ongoing dialogue grounded in empathy, we commit to learning from the diverse lived experiences of our students, families, and staff. This practice is essential to identifying and dismantling barriers to equity within our system.

Together, we aspire to build partnerships that foster ongoing dialogue and lead to intentional, Christ-centered action—ensuring that every voice is heard and every person is valued.

DOTHP

To uphold these values, we are driven by three interconnected pillars that define our mission: Faith, Education, and Community:

Faith

Through our faith, we are encouraged to embody a spirit of love and mercy, compassion and grace, forgiveness, truth and reconciliation. With the Catholic faith as our foundation, we strive to create nurturing and transformative communities that inspires individuals to embody the love of Christ in their lives and contribute to a more just and compassionate world.

Education

In accordance with the HWCDSB's Multi Year Strategic Plan,  HWCDSB's Equity and Inclusive Education Policy and Procedures, Ontario Human Rights Code and Ontario’s Education Equity Action Plan, The Dignity of the Human Person is interwoven into our Catholic educational framework, inspiring faith filled curricula that encourages critical thinking while empowering every learner to achieve the fullness of their humanity.

Community

DOTHP Rooted in the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, the HWCDSB is committed to empowering every student to become a collaborative contributor—“one who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work, which respects the rights of all and contributes to the common good” (Institute for Catholic Education). As St. John Paul II reminds us, “We are one family in the world. Building a community that empowers everyone to attain their full potential by respecting each other's dignity, rights and responsibilities makes the world a better place to live.”

Our mission extends beyond academics. We strive to instill in students, a sense of purpose that transcends classroom learning—calling them to be responsible citizens who bear witness to the glory of God by promoting peace, justice, and the sacredness of every human life.
