Grade 4 students from St. Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School and St. David Catholic Elementary School are diving deep into the world of underwater habitats! Through an exciting hands-on STEM project, students are using LEGO® Education’s Submerged theme to explore the intricacies of marine environments while honing their skills in robotics and engineering.

The Submerged theme from LEGO Education is designed to inspire curiosity and creativity as students build and program robotic models of underwater life and environments. By tackling challenges like simulating coral reef ecosystems or designing underwater exploration vehicles, students are gaining a deeper understanding of the science of habitats while developing essential skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Adding to the excitement, Officer Ryan from the Hamilton Police Service visited the classrooms to provide a unique perspective on the importance of marine environments and community safety. Officer Ryan shared insights into the diverse careers within the police force, including the marine unit, which works closely with coastguards to ensure safety on and around the water. His engaging presentation highlighted how the marine unit plays a vital role in search-and-rescue missions, environmental protection, and community support.

In addition to career exploration, Officer Ryan also delivered an important water safety message. Students learned how to stay safe near water, the importance of wearing life jackets, and how professionals work together to prevent accidents. This real-world connection underscored the importance of protecting both people and the environment.

This collaborative learning experience not only supports the Grade 4 Science curriculum but also inspires students to see the connection between classroom learning, future career opportunities, and the value of community partnerships. Through projects like this, students are empowered to think critically about their world and their role in it.

We are proud to provide engaging, hands-on learning opportunities that prepare our students for success while fostering a sense of responsibility for God’s creation and their communities. Stay tuned for more updates as our students continue their journey of exploration and discovery!
