The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is committed to ensuring that our Catholic schools are Christ-centred communities where the dignity of each student is honoured. As we mark Black History Month 2026, we reaffirm our commitment to honouring the rich histories, achievements, and enduring contributions of Black communities. With this in mind, we recognize that the story of Black history is distinct and deeply rooted in the ancestry of diverse cultural backgrounds.
This year’s theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” is a call to action, encouraging all of us to reflect on the past, celebrate Black excellence within our Canadian context, and uplift the leaders and changemakers of today and tomorrow.
Throughout the month of February, our schools will engage in meaningful learning, discussions, and activities that amplify Black voices, histories, and experiences. For both students and staff, this is a valuable opportunity to deepen awareness of untold stories and highlight Black trailblazers in politics, arts, sciences, education, and community life, who have enriched our Catholic school communities and our nation.
May we continue to walk together in faith, solidarity, and love, celebrating the beauty and strength of Black history. We encourage every member of the HWCDSB community to take part in celebrating Black history, culture, and achievements this month and throughout the year.
