St. Thomas More Celebrates Law Week

During the week of April 15, the Canada & World Studies Department at St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School proudly celebrated Law Week with a series of engaging events for its senior law classes.

Students welcomed two accomplished legal professionals: Siera Stampone, owner and principal lawyer of Stampone Law, and Justice Jason Little, a proud graduate of St. Thomas More, Class of 2002.

On Tuesday, April 15, Siera Stampone visited the school to share her experiences as a legal entrepreneur and practicing lawyer. Her firm, Stampone Law, focuses on a range of legal areas including residential and commercial real estate, wills, estate planning, estate administration, corporate law, and family law. Her visit provided students with valuable insight into the diverse pathways within the legal profession and the importance of strong legal foundations in everyday life.

On Thursday, April 17, Justice Jason Little addressed students on the 43rd anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, highlighting its significance in protecting the rights and freedoms of all Canadians. Justice Little now serves on the Ontario Court of Justice following a successful career in criminal defence law and public service with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada. He shared insights into the role of judges in our legal system and emphasized the importance of upholding fairness and justice in every case.

Both legal professionals gave students the opportunity to ask questions about real-world legal issues and career possibilities in law. The sessions were interactive and thought-provoking.

“It was a great experience to hear from a practicing lawyer and a judge about their experiences in the field of law. I was very interested to hear about their work, what led them to pursue a career in law, and some of the cases they’ve participated in,” remarked Connor Tisdale, Grade 12 law student. “Justice Little shared his unique law journey with us, and it really showed that you can take any path in law and succeed as long as you follow what you love,” said Grade 12 law student John Daly.

This initiative also served as a valuable reach-ahead opportunity for students enrolled in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, allowing them to connect classroom learning with sector-specific knowledge and career exploration in the legal field.

Law Week at St. Thomas More continues to inspire future legal minds and leaders, fostering a deeper understanding of justice, equity, and the role of law in Canadian society.
