The 2024 theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the critical role of persons with disabilities in shaping a more equitable and sustainable world. The global disability rights movement’s motto, “Nothing About Us Without Us,” highlights the necessity of participation, representation, and inclusion in all aspects of life.

The HWCDSB recognizes that every person contributes in his/her own unique way to the fabric of our Catholic community by sharing their God-given gifts. We continue to seek innovative and transformative means by which to include and assist all learners in achieving their potential and the fullness of their humanity.

This year’s theme encourages us to reflect on the leadership of persons with disabilities, whose advocacy and contributions have driven progress in their communities and beyond. Whether through advancing universal access to essential services, shaping policy, or leading initiatives for inclusive development, their voices have been instrumental in building a more inclusive world.

As we celebrate this important day, we ask ourselves:

How can I amplify the leadership and voices of persons with disabilities?

How can I help create spaces where everyone feels valued, represented, and included?

How can I support initiatives that ensure sustainable and disability-inclusive development?

Building an Inclusive and Sustainable Community

When we take the time to listen and learn from one another, we see the unique talents and contributions of every individual. By amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities, we strengthen our commitment to building Catholic communities that reflect dignity, equity, and love.

A smile, a listening ear, and a thoughtful approach to others can brighten someone’s whole day. Today, and every day, let us make a special effort to include everyone.

Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for making each of us unique, created in Your holy image.
Help us to see the gifts and leadership of all Your children,
especially persons with disabilities,
and to value their contributions to our communities.
Guide our actions to create Catholic schools and communities
that are inclusive, equitable, and centered in Your love.
Through Christ our Lord,
Amen.
