Kateryna (Katy) K., a Grade 5 student at St. Michael Catholic Elementary School, has won the grand prize in Habitat for Humanity Canada’s Meaning of Home contest. Her poem, “What does home mean to me?”, earned a $30,000 grant for Habitat for Humanity Hamilton.
This year, Hamilton students broke records with 437 entries, raising $4,370 for Habitat Hamilton. On June 19th, the whole school celebrated Katy's achievement. Principal Anna Boyle and Superintendent of Education Morris Hucal joined Katy's classmates, teachers, and family in congratulating her.
Representatives from Habitat for Humanity and Sagen also attended, highlighting Katy's dedication to helping others and the community's support for affordable housing.
Katy’s accomplishment reflects her goodness, talent, and caring spirit. It also shows HWCDSB’s commitment to placing Christ and the teachings of the Catholic Church at the centre of our students' learning experiences, nurturing students who make a difference.
The celebration ended on a high note, with Habitat for Humanity thanking the students by shooting T-shirts into the crowd with a T-shirt cannon, adding excitement and fun to the event.
