Bishop Tonnos CSS Celebrates Michela Fricano as Recipient of Prestigious Scholarships
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that Michela Fricano, a Grade 12 student from Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School, has been awarded two major scholarships for this fall. Michela was awarded the Queen’s Chancellor Scholarship back in March, the University’s most prestigious honour, valued at $50,000 over her academic career. Fricano was over the moon, but still hesitant to accept it.
While Queen’s University presented an enticing opportunity with its prestigious Chancellor Scholarship, Michela had her heart set on the University of Toronto and its Arts and Science Program, particularly drawn to the Cinema Studies option available in the second year. Given her experiences as a working actor frequently employed in the Toronto area, she recognized the excellence of U of T's Cinema Program. However, the decision became much clearer when she received the U of T National Scholarship in April, valued at an impressive $100,000 over four years.
Fricano was elated at the news after waiting for months on the decision. She was one of only 15 students across Canada that were honoured with this scholarship.
Michela has shown leadership in many of her endeavours. She is extremely creative and talented in the performing arts; since childhood she has acted in a long list of television shows, movies, and audiobooks, even earning herself a daytime Emmy at the age of 12 for her leading role in the Amazon Prime original series Dino Dana. She was the floor director for TNT (the school’s morning announcements) for the past two years, and she was able to use her industry experience in that role. She also mentored younger students in her years on the Prefect Council, where she currently serves as Head Prefect in her Grade 12 year. Her academics are outstanding, and she thrives in her creative outlets. She co-founded the BT Performing Arts Society and was heavily involved in the play for the past two years, helping co-write and direct the productions.
Her Drama teacher Mr. LeRoux emphasizes that although her accomplishments are impressive, “what sets her apart is her heart of gold. I have seen Michela time and time again, always willing to go above and beyond to help her fellow students in any way she can, whether it is in a performance, assignment, studying for a test, or just a shoulder to cry on. Along with her infectious smile, Michela has this ability to allow others to be the best versions of themselves. She is a leader that helps create other leaders.”
Ms. Fede, her Prefect Advisor agrees, saying “Michela is an exceptional leader; as the Head of the Prefect Council her commitment to academics, Catholic Community and inclusion shine through her no matter what activity she is engaged in. She is an optimist and a natural problem solver. Her ability to work supportively with others is an incredible asset that will serve her well in her future endeavours."
When asked if she had any advice for other students, Michela shared, “Honestly, I'd say get involved. Everything I've done extra-curricular wise were just things that I really liked to do! You can make change and things happen if you take the initiative, but it was also about doing what I truly loved. It didn't feel like work; it was just fun. So, get involved!"
Anticipating the fall, Michela exuded excitement as she discussed her upcoming university experience, particularly the prospect of living on campus and picking the residence of her choice as part of her scholarship. "I'm truly looking forward to immersing myself in everything university life has to offer," she remarked. "Leaving Bishop Tonnos is bittersweet because of all the amazing experiences I've had here. However, I'm also excited for what's ahead, the new challenges, and opportunities to grow."
She also expressed deep gratitude for her family's support, mentioning her mom, dad, and two older brothers who also attended Bishop Tonnos CSS. “Their support has been such a big part of my success and who I am,” Michela said.
We congratulate Michela Fricano on her remarkable achievements. Her journey reflects her faith-filled heart, integrity, and commitment to excellence. She will undoubtedly continue to inspire others to pursue their aspirations with determination and compassion.
