We are proud to announce that Lucia Marchionda has been awarded the 2023 Government of Canada Emerging Leader Award. This prestigious honour recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities through volunteerism, inspiring others to make a difference. Lucia received the award for the Ontario region on April 15, 2024, in Ottawa, Ontario.
As part of the award, Lucia was granted $5,000 to donate to a non-profit organization of her choice. She chose the Wish Heart Fund, which supports patients and families at McMaster Children’s Hospital Oncology Ward. The donation will help provide toys, books, gift cards, and maintain the slushie machines for children battling cancer.
Lucia has been with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board community since kindergarten and graduating from St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School in the class of 2018. Over the years, Lucia has held various positions, both paid and voluntary, within the board, further demonstrating her commitment to our community.
In addition to her volunteer work, Lucia is currently pursuing her passion for education as a Teacher Candidate in the Concurrent Education program at Brock University. She is working towards a double bachelor’s degree (BA/BEd) with the goal of becoming an Educator. Lucia is dedicated to inspiring and empowering future generations through inclusive and nurturing learning environments.
Lucia has made a significant impact on our school board by creating the HWCDSB Christian Service Program, an accessible digital platform for secondary students. This platform facilitates student engagement in community leadership while fulfilling their graduation requirements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she organized virtual volunteer events and initiatives, allowing students to earn community service hours and give back to the community despite the challenges.
Lucia's commitment to volunteerism extends across numerous organizations, including the Ontario Physical Literacy Summit, the Italian Abruzzese Federation of Hamilton, St. Anthony of Padua & St. Francis of Xavier Roman Catholic Church, and the Terry Fox Run, among others. Her personal experiences with cancer in her family have fueled her dedication to cancer-related causes, reflecting her compassionate and selfless nature.
In Lucia's words, "Volunteering allows me to give back and help others in the community, especially for those in need of a positive light."
