The Junior Math Challenge engaged students in a day of mathematical wonder and fun.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board hosted its Junior Math Challenge on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School. The day began with greetings and a presentation by Jonathan So, an elementary math teacher who is on a quest to bring out the beauty and wonder of math to his students. The day concluded with an awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m.
Jointly sponsored by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association – Hamilton-Wentworth Unit and Trustees of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, the competition invited junior division students from each school to experience fun-filled and thought-provoking mathematical adventures. Students developed their ability to think and reason, built number sense and computational skills, problem solved, and explored various real-life mathematical situations.
The teams were made up of two students from Grades 4, 5, and 6 who worked alone, in pairs, and as a group to solve problems and create mathematical solutions as they rotated through five centers. These centers focused on different math areas, including problem-solving, mental math, number and spatial sense, various creative, thought-inspiring puzzles, and coding challenges.
That year’s Junior Math Challenge saw more than 250 junior division students from the system come out for a day of mathematical adventures and fun.
