The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) proudly supports the 2024 HFD Fire Safety First program initiated by the Hamilton Fire Department. From February to June 2024, our schools will actively contribute to community safety by disseminating monthly fire safety messages.
These crucial messages, sourced from reputable entities including the Hamilton Fire Department, the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs, and the National Fire Prevention Association, will be communicated through various channels.
In March 2024, our focus is on Burn and Scald Prevention, highlighting the importance of keeping children safe in the kitchen and around hot surfaces. Engage your child with fun and educational activities such as connect-the-dots puzzles:
For non-readers: What’s HOT? What’s NOT? Activity sheet.
For readers: Hot, Can Get Hot, Not Hot? Activity Sheet.
Additionally, caregivers are reminded to exercise caution while cooking. Turn pot handles inwards and establish a "kid-free zone" of at least one meter around the stove to prevent accidents.
For kids using a microwave oven, it’s important to be extra cautious. Remember to use oven mitts or potholders when removing items from the microwave to protect your hands. Be mindful of steam escaping when removing a lid or even when opening a bag of popcorn.
