The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board celebrates African Canadian Heritage during Black History Month in February
February signifies Black History Month, a period dedicated to honouring and celebrating the enormous achievements and contributions of Black Canadians—both past and present. This observance allows us to pay tribute to the diverse backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and histories of Black individuals and the broader Black community. Additionally, it is important to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions made by Black Canadians within the local Hamilton community, individuals who have made and continue to make a lasting difference.
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board welcomes opportunities to reflect on Black history and celebrate Black excellence daily. The month of February provides a special time for us as Canadians and, particularly as a Catholic Community to embrace solidarity, listening to and learning from our brothers and sisters in Christ.
The focus of Black History Month 2024 in Canada is “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build.” HWCDSB celebrates this theme paying tribute to the Black community by highlighting the historical contributions and achievements of Black Hamiltonians who have helped to shape our city, and our country.
“Out of our shared conviction to promote the Dignity of the Human Person, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board encourages all within our Catholic school system to learn and teach Black History, during February and throughout the school year, “said Patrick Daly, Chairperson.
We encourage every member of the HWCDSB to take part in celebrating Black history, culture, and achievements, this month and throughout the year.
