It all started with a promise. A promise few knew about.
With a large number of girls attending tryouts hoping to make the Senior Girls Football team, it was evident this team was going to be full of potential. That was the easy part. The hard part was trying to decide from early on to select 12 girls.
Starting the season with a victory, the girls continued their winning ways by going undefeated at the St. Jean De Brebeuf tournament, capturing gold by defeating St. Ann’s Ancaster.
Going undefeated in the Regular Season, defeating Corpus Christi, St. Eugene, St. Matthew, and at the Brebeuf Invitational Tournament, the Senior Girls were determined to fulfil their promise and bring Coach home a Championship.
Following the tournament, the girls came together to build not only on their success, but also build up areas where they felt they could improve and started to zero in on them, finding new ways to work on what they felt were their weaknesses while getting stronger. Stringing together two victories post tournament, without conceding a point, the girls were doing just that: working on building a Championship defence.
The Championship game brought some added pressure, with girls having to change their other commitments to attend. In the pre-game huddle, a group of girls, not destined, but determined to fulfill their promise, they spoke "Miss, we promise we are going to win you a Championship '' and they were not about to have this broken. And so, the promise was unveiled.
Starting off slow, the girls were down by 8 early on, but the vibe was extremely positive with the sidelines buzzing with noise and words of encouragement. Sure enough, things started to flow when Olivia DiCaria threw a 30 yard bomb to Jahvaya and converted on a 2pt convert and from there, the IC girls never let up, kept the pressure going, allowing Our Lady of Hope to cross half only two more times in the game and stopping them on 1st and goal three times.
When the final whistle blew, the Immaculate Conception Senior Girls Flag Football Team were Champions not only winning 34-8 but also, making good on their promise, saying "See I told you Ms. We told you we promised!"
